LOTUS
floor seat
2018
A flat piece of rug, shaped as a cutting pattern, climbs up to third dimension, becoming a space defining furniture.
LOTUS is a floor seat made of a soft pile area rug.
It draws inspiration from the traditional Turkish culture, where people sat on the floor for many activities. Yet, in this culture, the rugs were not just used as floor coverings, but also as 'space defining elements'. In the nomadic culture, the walls of the tents were covered with rugs, even furnitures were upholstered by rugs.
As a contemporary interpretation of this culture, Lotus creates a synthesis of typologies: a space definning area rug and a floor seat.
